The Rieman Great Lakes Region has several English speaking communities in Michigan and
Ohio. Most of the English speaking communities have been in existence for many years. Many
of the initial CLC communities in the region were initially formed with the assistance of a Jesuit,
Father Nick Rieman. When the region structure changed in the early 1990’s the region was
named in his honor. For many years, until the pandemic, the twice yearly regional meetings
were held in Toledo, Ohio. The regional meetings were designed to promote community
building, spiritual conversation and prayer. The Toledo location is within easy driving distance
of both Michigan and Cleveland CLC members.
As 2022 begins, many communities are still meeting via zoom or occasional in-person meetings combined with on-line meetings. Since most communities have been in existence for multiple
years, on-line meetings have been a comfortable option. There are communities in the Detroit,
Michigan area, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan and the greater Cleveland area
of Ohio. Currently there are two communities in formation, one in Ann Arbor, Michigan and
one in Cleveland, Ohio. The Detroit area also is home to a community of guides that meets
periodically to discuss the needs of area communities.
The “oldest” community that is still meeting is called Family Life and is located in Cleveland,
Ohio. Most members of the community became affiliated with Christian Life Community in the
early 1950’s. In the early years of the community, many members joined CLC during their
college years. They continued to meet as a young adult community and have bonded with each
other ever since that time. The “youngest” community, Magis, is in Cleveland and while
members have joined at varying points of time, many members have been members for over
ten years. Some of the newer members recently made temporary commitments to CLC.
Cleveland is also home to Potter’s Clay CLC, a community that occasionally has helped with clay
projects that help with prayer, spiritual symbols.
