South Sudan became independent in 2011. After 50 years of civil war in Sudan, independence was granted peacefully. Since independence though, groups within South Sudan have been fighting for power. More than 10,000 people have been killed and 60,000 people have left the country as refugees. Over 60% of the population has been displaced by the ongoing violence.
CLC in South Sudan
CLC communities are present in two towns, Juba and Wau. Juba is the capitol. It is in the south central part of the country. Wau is in the northwest. Both towns have adult CLCs and student CLCs.
The Apostolate of CLC members in South Sudan
Most of the members of CLC have lost family members and/or friends in the violence. CLC members visit the families of those in CLC and those in the broader community who have lost family members to offer consolation and support.
Members of CLC are also active in the Catholic Church’s effort to promote peace and reconciliation.
Once a month the members of CLC come together for a retreat day to feel the presence and support of Our God and to bolster their hope.
Let us pray for our CLC sisters and brothers in South Sudan.
